Apple delays release of digital ID cards to 2022

Apple has delayed the release of features that will eventually allow you to save your ID in the company’s wallet application. In the update to the official iOS 15 website seen by Macrumor, Apple said that functionality will now arrive at the beginning of 2022. The company previously planned to launch at the end of 2021.

Apple first announced the features at WWDC 2021. At that time, the company said this tool would allow you to add your country’s SIM or ID card to the Apple Wallet just as you would credit or your debit card. Among the first locations to support the feature will choose the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint at several US airports.

In those locations, you will have the option to use your iPhone or Apple Watch to present your ID to TSA. You will do it by tapping your device on the identity reader, and you don’t need to submit your iPhone or Apple Watch to TSA employees.

In September, Apple announced eight countries would support features when launched, starting with Arizona and Georgia, and Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma and Utah to be followed. Outside the TSA checkpoint, Apple said retailers and venues would add support later.

Outside early 2022, Apple has not distributed certain release dates for the feature. What is clear is that it will not arrive with iOS 15.2. The update is currently in beta testing and does not include support to save digital ID.
